ILLUSTRATION: TOP CIRCLE • Japanese saws are highly effective, but supervise their use with beginners. Stiff-bladed utility saws (top) are easier for beginners to use than thinner, double-sided flush-trimming saws (bottom)
MIDDLE CIRCLE • A spokeshave (top) is an excellent introductory tool for kids. Smoothing planes (bottom, about 12" long) are easy to handle.
BOTTOM CIRCLE • Pre-punch holes in leather projects, then let kids sew pieces together with waxed twine • Decorative punches can make it easy to stamp wood and leather; use them with a ball-peen hammer
ABOVE • Clear softwood is an easy-going choice for beginners; even dried branches make excellent workpieces. A solid work station is essential for getting kids started
