How to safely take down a tree

Control the fall with these helpful tips

Identify which way the tree wants to come down naturally. It may be leaning or there may be a number of heavy branches on one side. Don't attempt to get a tree to fall differently than it wants to.

Step 1: Complete two cuts to remove a wedge of wood on the side toward the fall. Extend the notch, located 12" from the ground, about one-third of the way into the diameter of the tree.
